Chase Goals, Not Trends: Building on the Real Path to Success

This week, we’re taking that concept a step further. Once you understand that progress isn’t linear, the next step is learning how to stay focused on what matters most: your goals. Too often, we see athletes distracted by shiny new training methods or trying to juggle multiple programs, thinking more is better. But the reality is: doing too much the wrong way can hold you back more than doing less the right way.

The Problem with Trend-Chasing

As coaches, we’ve seen this scenario play out countless times. An athlete starts a program designed specifically for them but then adds bits and pieces from other programs they found online or through friends:

  • They do our speed work but tack on a strength program they found on social media.
  • They sprinkle in extra conditioning because someone said they need more endurance.
  • They find another program for explosiveness and throw that into the mix too.

Suddenly, they’re doing two or three programs poorly instead of one program to the best of their ability.

Here’s the issue: training plans are written to address specific goals and are designed with balance in mind. At Speed Mechanics, our programs incorporate all the elements you need—speed, strength, power—based on your training age, goals, and sport. By adding random components, you risk overtraining, missing key recovery windows, or diluting the effectiveness of your training. If you feel like you need to work on something specific or have concerns about your progress, talk to your coach. Communication is critical. If we don’t know, we can’t help you. Your coach is here to adapt your program or offer solutions to meet your needs and ensure you’re progressing safely and effectively.

More Isn’t Better—Better Is Better

This is a common misconception in training. Many athletes believe the more they train, the faster they’ll improve. But that’s simply not true.

Here’s what happens when you try to do too much:

  1. Increased Risk of Injury: Overloading your body without adequate recovery breaks it down instead of building it up.
  2. Plateaued Performance: Too much volume without focus leads to stalled progress.
  3. Burnout: Constantly trying to do more drains your energy and motivation.

A well-designed training program isn’t about doing the most—it’s about doing the right things at the right time. That’s why we have set up our program in the manner we have, so that we can address your individual needs, ensuring you’re training optimally, not excessively.
